A Year in Review: CPAF’s 2017-18 Annual Report

Center for the Pacific Asian Family (CPAF) is pleased to present its fiscal year 2017-2018 annual report, celebrating 40 years of engaging the community to end domestic and sexual violence through culturally-grounded crisis intervention and violence prevention.

The report highlights CPAF’s roots, reflecting on how the organization has grown to become what it is today. As CPAF founder Nilda Rimonte shares, violence against women affects everyone. In today’s complex environment, we truly appreciate your thoughtful contribution, which allows CPAF to provide life-saving services.

With the help of many caring supporters, survivors of domestic and sexual violence graduating from CPAF’s programs are able to build violence-free households for themselves and their children. A recent graduate shared the following with her Family Advocate.

“I came to the shelter with a broken heart and no hope. But I am a different person today. I learned a lot, feel secure and have hope for the future. I thank you for this program and everything you and CPAF did for me and my son.”

At the end of her stay, the program graduate cooked a communal dinner of traditional dishes from her culture for staff and residents to share, as her way of saying thanks.

November 27th is #GivingTuesday – a global day of giving that harnesses the collective power of individuals, communities and organizations to encourage philanthropy and to celebrate generosity worldwide. Everyone as a collective can emphasize what it means to give back together.

It’s National Gratitude Month and we would like to express our deep gratitude to all who supported CPAF’s 40th Anniversary Gala on Friday, September 21, 2018. More than 400 participated in the celebration at the Los Angeles River Center & Gardens that raised more than $200,000 to support CPAF’s 40 years of engaging the community to end domestic and sexual violence through culturally-grounded crisis intervention and violence prevention.

  • We were delighted to have ABC7’s David Ono serve as emcee for our gala. David Ono is the anchor for ABC7 Eyewitness News at 4pm and 6pm, the top rated newscasts in all of Los Angeles. He also anchors Eyewitness News on KDOC-TV at 7pm.
  • 40th Anniversary Chair and CPAF Board Member Erwin Pineda welcomed guests and thanked fellow committee members, including Brittany Morey, Willy Ma, and Culinary Co-Chairs Dan Fan and Elaine Chan.
  • Gala guests heard from a former CPAF resident and survivor of domestic violence, who has since earned a degree and who now works at a full-time job.
  • Scott Iseri, Board Chair for our community partner, Project MotiVAte, spoke to partnership in building healthier and safer communities, starting with youth: “…we have partnered up with CPAF in a healthy relationships curriculum, where leaders from CPAF came to our weekly study halls and provided a series of workshops, bringing awareness of the different types of domestic violence and opening a dialogue where youth can explore these ideas in a safe space.”
  • Our staff, volunteers and friends helped create a festive and supportive atmosphere with Hands of Hope Jewelry, Yasuko’s Boutique, and “Experience the CPAF Journey”, an interactive installation demonstrating initial contact a survivor might make through the hotline to the realities of living in a shelter.

Bank of America Contributes $15,000 Grant to CPAF

On June 26, 2018, representatives from Bank of America presented CPAF’s Shelter Program Director, Patima Komolamit, with the grant check.

Bank of America has contributed $15,000 in operating support for CPAF’s services for homeless Asian and Pacific Islander (API) survivors of domestic and sexual violence. The grant will help the low-income, limited English speaking families residing in CPAF’s shelters to increase their economic resources in the upcoming year.

This operating support will sustain and enhance CPAF’s trauma-informed services, which respond to the needs of survivors who have difficulty obtaining jobs due to limited English proficiency, lack of a work history in the United States, and lack of community connections due to years of isolation and abuse. CPAF also offers workshops focused on financial literacy, budgeting and finding jobs, provided in API languages such as Mandarin, Korean and Vietnamese. These resources help survivors exit from the shelter and transition into permanent housing, establishing a safe home for themselves and their children.

CPAF is thankful for Bank of America’s continued support which helps to meet the critical needs of the individuals and families we serve.

Bank of Hope Contributes $20,000 Grant to CPAF

CPAF received a $20,000 general operating grant contribution from Bank of Hope to support CPAF’s emergency and transitional housing programs, which shelter and provide counseling and case management services to low- and moderate-income survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault in 30 Asian and Pacific Islander languages and dialects.

 

We are thankful for Bank of Hope’s support which helps CPAF meet the critical needs of the individuals and families we serve. We appreciate partnering with Bank of Hope to build healthy and safe communities and nurture change together.

Nov. 28 is #GivingTuesday: Up to $50k in Matching

In honor of #GivingTuesday, Facebook and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation are contributing up to $2 million in matching to donations made through Facebook on November 28th.

How can you help? As a supporter of Center for the Pacific Asian Family (CPAF) we’d be honored if you would take this opportunity to show your commitment to our work by creating a Facebook fundraiser and sharing with your friends on #GivingTuesday.  Creating a fundraiser is easy and we welcome fundraisers with any goal amount.

Here’s how to create a fundraiser:

  • Click “Raise Money”
  • Select a cover photo option
  • The title and CPAF’s mission are pre-populated – feel free to tell your story, add an end date and a goal
  • Be sure to include #GivingTuesday in your description, then click “Create”
  • Then on #GivingTuesday, Nov. 28th, share and invite friends to give to your fundraiser

Where will the money raised go?

CPAF operates the only Asian and Pacific Islander (API)-language crisis hotline for survivors of domestic and sexual violence in Southern California, and the only rape crisis center tailored for API survivors state-wide. Families stay at CPAF’s safe and confidential shelters when they move from crisis to safety and healing. CPAF conducts community outreach to raise awareness about domestic violence and sexual assault, and partners with community-based organizations to deepen violence prevention strategies with API youth.

  • $1,000 pays for a week of summer activities for our youth at our shelters
  • $500 gives a stipend to a survivor to get job training or take English as a Second Language
  • $250 supplies a housewarming basket for families moving into their new home.
  • $100 funds a workshop on dating violence prevention for Asian and Pacific Islander youth.
  • $50 provides one night of emergency food and shelter for a family.

Donations to nonprofits made through Facebook’s charitable giving tools on November 28th will be matched up to $50,000 per nonprofit or $1,000 per fundraiser or donate button, until the $2 million in matching funds run out. The match will begin at 8AM EST (5AM PST).

A Year in Review: CPAF’s 2017 Annual Report

On behalf of everyone at Center for the Pacific Asian Family, THANK YOU! CPAF would not be able to provide its prevention, intervention, shelter, outreach and community engagement services without the generous support of our funders.

After more than 17 years as partners serving survivors of domestic violence, CPAF and Asian Pacific Women’s Center (APWC) integrated to enhance our capacity to serve the diverse Asian and Pacific Islander communities of Southern California.

As a unified organization, we look forward to continuing to support survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault through linguistically-appropriate and culturally-specific services. Thank you for your generosity as we embark on our new chapter together.

FY 2016-17 Annual Report Highlights:

– In December 2016, CPAF’s Community Center moved to a larger facility in a more easily-accessible Mid-Wilshire location.

– In December 2016, CPAF completed a comprehensive renovation of its Emergency Shelter facility’s kitchen.

– In March 2017, CPAF integrated with sister agency APWC, adding 24 beds to its Transitional Program.

– This year, CPAF helped lead the movement to increase language access and build capacity in the community, both locally and state-wide.

o The City of Los Angeles selected CPAF to implement a project to increase language access for limited English speaking survivors at partner domestic violence organizations, and to strengthen CPAF’s Language Bank of bilingual volunteers, who support translation and interpretation needs of partner agencies.

o CPAF is one of six partners in the Multi-Year Language Access Resources (MYLAR) Project, which provides state-wide trainings for participants to learn how to adopt a diversity framework, enhance leadership and budget strategies, and increase language access at their workplace, all in reference to serving victims of crime more effectively throughout the state.

– CPAF’s Prevention Program experienced a 77% increase in youth participation over the previous year.

New Year Means New Hope for a Makeover!

Can you help us transform our new Community Center into a warm and welcoming atmosphere?

We are in need of matching furniture, signage, and paintings or other artwork, especially in the common areas that first greet our survivors and visitors.

This is a safe space for some of our survivors to come in for counseling and healing workshops. It is also a place where our advocates take hotline calls and our staff prepare ways to better serve our communities in Southern California and beyond.

We could use volunteers with an artistic background to help us settle into our new home. We would also appreciate corporate donors who may have donations that fit our needs.
